Desktop Anti-Virus without the Management Headaches

With the damage caused by computer viruses estimated at $13 billion in 2001, it’s imperative that companies implement comprehensive protection against malicious code. Yet managing and updating anti-virus software can be both costly and complex. Now, McAfee® Security helps corporations meet this challenge—by providing a managed anti-virus solution via the Internet.

VirusScan ASaP is the first online anti-virus service that provides continuously updated protection against malicious code. Based on McAfee Security’s leading-edge scanning technology, VirusScan ASaP lets you offload the burden of managing anti-virus software to the leaders in anti-virus technology. This reduces overhead costs significantly by allowing valuable IT resources to re-focus on your core business or other critical projects while you rest easy with the knowledge that your desktops are protected by VirusScan ASaP. Whether your company has two computers, 200, or 200,000,VirusScan ASaP can protect every one of them.

Automatic Updates

One of the biggest challenges of guarding against debilitating viruses is simply keeping abreast of the latest threats and updates. Utilizing bandwidth-friendly Rumor technology, VirusScan ASaP provides daily anti-virus updates across your entire desktop infrastructure. This helps eliminate the huge ongoing costs associated with managing and updating anti-virus software yourself—costs that can equal nearly 80% of the total cost of owning that protection. And best of all, it’s completely transparent to your IT team and end-users. VirusScan ASaP continuously monitors your system, comparing your virus data files with the latest ones provided by McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team) and updating them automatically on a daily basis—you never have to worry about updates again.

Rumor technology, as part of the VirusScan ASaP service, provides the mechanism for keeping the agent, its scanning engine, and virus signature files all up to date. By using secure, peer-to-peer communication to distribute updates between desktops, Rumor minimizes the number of desktops that have to obtain product updates via the Internet. With Rumor, your desktops will share updates independently of any interaction with a network administrator or end-user—all with minimal impact to your network bandwidth.

Internet Independent Updates

McAfee Security recognizes for reasons of cost, security, and productivity, that some users may not have Internet access, but still need comprehensive virus protection. The Internet Independent update feature allows these users to receive full virus protection without having an Internet connection. Rumor technology simply searches on the same subnet for a workstation, with Internet access, which has been pre-configured as a relay. Using this relay connection a workstation without Internet access can download an update directly from the NOC (Network Operations Center), or alternatively, receive it internally from another workstation on the network. Relays are easily configured during the initial installation or, within existing VirusScan ASaP environments, utilizing either the Silent or Push Install methods.

Dial-Up Connection Updates

Telecommuters and mobile employees often connect to the network sporadically throughout the day representing a high security risk as well as a large management problem in terms of keeping their virus protection current. These problems now become a thing of the past—VirusScan ASaP checks for a new anti-virus update at the point of every dial up connection to a network—removing the ongoing management burden and improving network security.

Web-Based Reports

VirusScan ASaP delivers Web-based reports that give you a bird’s eye-view of your network and anti-virus environment. Reports detail enterprise-wide information such as coverage status summary, desktops updated, and viruses cleaned, deleted, and quarantined. Reports are available 24x7, and can be accessed at the secure Web site that also provides immediate access to virus alerts and other valuable virus information. All reports are exclusively secured with an administrator login and an SSL connection.

Deployment Options

With VirusScan ASaP, there’s no waiting to begin protecting your network from known viruses. You begin receiving continuous 24x7 virus protection immediately. Once you’ve purchased the service you have three easy methods for deployment:

Common, Silent, and Push.

Common Install

Once VirusScan ASaP is purchased, you will receive an email containing a customized URL that was specifically created for your organization. All that’s needed is to distribute the URL to the relevant employees, via email, with instructions to click on the URL and allow for the brief product installation to finish. That's it, implementing VirusScan ASaP is complete. You are up and running in minutes—with a distributed updating system in place and essential reports enabled.

Silent Install

As an alternative solution to installing VirusScan ASaP across your desktops you can download and deploy the VirusScan ASaP Silent Install Package VSSetup.exe. This executable file can then be installed on all desktops by any third party deployment software, using simple login scripts or preinstalled on new machines. Once installed the VirusScan ASaP service will be activated on each of the desktops when they next boot up.

Push Install

Companies that do not have a third party software deployment solution or opt not to use their software can use the Push Install utility to seamlessly deploy VirusScan ASaP to all supported computers on NT networks. This method allows VirusScan ASaP to be up and running on all computers throughout the network, without having any end-user interaction.

Comprehensive Detection and Cleaning

VirusScan ASaP is based on the market leading McAfee Security scanning technology. Pre-configured as an On- Access scanner, it silently monitors all possible virus sources, including floppy disks, CD-ROMs, Internet downloads, email attachments, shared files, and online services. Once detected, viruses are automatically cleaned, deleted, or even quarantined for future analysis and origin tracing. On-demand scanning is also available with a simple mouse click. VirusScan ASaP is proven to find known viruses wherever they are on your desktop (ICSA and Checkmark Level 2).

AVERT

VirusScan ASaP is part of a range of managed services backed by McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team), the top-ranked anti-virus research center in the world. With offices on five continents and over 65 researchers employed worldwide, McAfee AVERT identifies more viruses and provides the latest cures faster than any other vendor.
